Following the success of the inaugural Summer Matchplay in 2008, we have now launched a new series of matchplay qualifiers for Winter 2008/9. The winners will go forward to the regional finals in 2009 and compete for the opportunity to represent club and country in the World Final 2009.
The Winter Matchplay is open to all current golf club members who have a handicap issued by a CONGU affiliated golf club. The handicap limits are 24 for men and 32 for ladies but golfers with higher handicaps may enter and play off these limits. Pairs may be men, ladies or mixed and may even be made up of golfers from different golf clubs - although one club must be nominated as the pair's home club. Players must be a minimum of 16 years of age by 1st December 2008 and any pair consisting of two players less than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible adult to all events.
The closing date for entries is 23rd November 2008 when a draw will be made to group pairs into brackets of a maximum of 16 pairs. This draw will be made on a regional basis in order to minimise the travel required to play matches in the knockout stages. Each pair will be sent a copy of their draw by email by 28th November which will contain the names, golf clubs, handicaps and contact details of each of the 16 pairs in their bracket.
Play commences in December and will consist of a maximum of four rounds of knockout matchplay to determine the winning pair from each bracket:
Round 1 to be played by 31st December 2008 Round 2 to be played by 31st January 2009
Round 3 to be played by 28th February 2009
Round 4 to be played by 31st March 2009 The winning pair from each bracket qualifies for one of the regional finals to be held throughout the UK in August and September 2009 where they will compete alongside the winners of the club qualifying events for the chance to represent club and country at the International Pairs World Final 2009.
The cost per pair for entry into matchplay is £30.
