Thunder Bay team wins Eastern Canadian
International Pairs Championship

John Dicasmirro (r)and Don Doswell (l) will be heading off to Scotland in 2009 to play in the International Pairs World Final at Carnoustie as a result of their exciting win this week at the Eastern Canadian Final held at The Raven Golf Course in Thornbury.
Dicasmirro and Doswell, representing the Chapples Golf Club in Thunder Bay, Ontario, actually finished the 18 hole event tied with the team of Robert Sampogna and Robert Frempong of the Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Georgetown with 43 stableford points. After three playoff attempts, the Thunder Bay duo emerged as winners.
Third place was taken by a father and son team from the Cambridge Golf Club, Martin and James Pemberton. They were representing the Ontario Regional GolfScene Tour and they finished with a stableford score of 42.
This year’s event was hosted by The Raven at Lora Bay, home to the 2007 Telus Skins Game and the 2008 Wayne Gretzky Classic. Teams from across Ontario and the Maritimes competed in a ‘two man best ball’ format with a ¾ handicap allowance. The stableford format gives all players an equal chance to win.
Conceived in the United Kingdom in 1998 as a golf tournament to celebrate the millennium, International Pairs is now firmly established as a major golf event world-wide. Tens of thousands of golfers compete at local events with the objective to represent their country at the World Final. The unique aspect of the event is that an individual can register to play at his or her home course for only $30. Local winners play the Canadian Final and the World Final at no additional cost.
John Daly said , “I had heard the rumours about the International Pairs competition and I thought, ‘wow, what a great idea’. I can’t believe there isn’t a golf club in the country that would not want to give its members a chance to take part. It’s so easy to enter and it’s such good value for the money.”
